Stripe to Add Dozens of London Employees By 2022

Online payments processor Stripe Inc is looking to add dozens of new staff for its London office in 2022 in conjunction with a larger push in Europe, according to a Monday (Sept. 20) report from Bloomberg.

The Irish American FinTech and software-as-a-service company is dual-headquartered in San Francisco, Calif., and Dublin, Ireland, according to its website. Stripe, which provides payment processing software and application programming interfaces for eCommerce websites and mobile applications in particular, is planning to make London its FinTech office and has already added close to 200 employees there, according to Bloomberg.

Monday’s news comes about a year after Stripe looked to thin its staff in expensive areas, including San Francisco, Seattle and New York. Stripe last year offered employees in those areas a $20,000 bonus in exchange for the employee’s willingness to leave San Francisco, Seattle or New York and work remotely instead.

Stripe, which was founded in 2010, processes hundreds of billions of dollars in transactions for businesses, including giants like GoogleUberAmazon and Zoom. The company could potentially end up challenging big names like China’s ByteDance and Ant Group for the title of the world’s most valuable startup, PYMNTS reported previously. Those two companies are worth around $200 billion each. Stripe was valued at $95 billion following a March funding round.

The company has been in talks for some time about going public, though a firm date has not been set.

Stripe President and Co-Founder John Collison told PYMNTS previously about the possibilities facing new entrepreneurs starting businesses in the wake of the pandemic. Collison said there could be new opportunities for businesses that opened during the pandemic, with 2 million businesses started in 2020 via Stripe — a number that was higher than the number created in the company’s entire lifetime to that point.
